The Sacred Sthalam
Sri Kurma Varadaraja Swamy Temple at Kurmai, in Palamaner Mandal of Chittoor District, is counted among the most ancient temples of Andhra Pradesh. For generations, devotees have gathered here to seek the grace of Lord Varadaraja Swamy — the Boon-Granting Lord — and the temple's annual Brahmotsavam draws thousands of pilgrims from across the region.
Worn by the passage of centuries, the temple is now being restored in carefully planned phases by the Endowments Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh, with the wholehearted participation of the residents of Kurmai, devotees, and well-wishers. What is being raised is not merely a structure of stone, but a living spiritual beacon meant to stand for many generations to come.
A Divine Sign
This rare discovery, made during the very excavation undertaken to restore the temple, re-energised the entire community. To the devotees of Kurmai it was an unmistakable sign — that the Lord Himself wishes for His sacred home to be fully restored and worshipped once more in its complete glory.
The Work of Restoration
The renovation is being carried out under the Endowments Department's Common Good Fund (C.G.F) scheme, in two carefully planned phases that preserve the temple's spiritual essence while securing it for centuries to come.
Phase 1 · Begun 2023
The aged main shrine — including the Garbha Gudi (sanctum) — was carefully dismantled and rebuilt for modern longevity, while preserving its sacred form and spiritual essence.

An Appeal to All Devotees
The Government has done its part. For Phase 2 to begin, the Devasthanam must now place its matching contribution — and the window is short.
By the grace of the Andhra Pradesh Government's continuing initiative to renovate the state's ancient temples, Kurmai's temple has once again been selected for C.G.F aid for Phase 2. Of the total estimated cost of ₹1.30 crore, the Endowments Department has sanctioned ₹1.04 crore.
As with Phase 1, the department requires the Devasthanam to first deposit a matching contribution of ₹26 lakh to release the sanctioned aid. This deposit must be completed by early June 2026. The temple authorities sought an extension of this date but were not granted one — the project will proceed on strict timelines.
The residents of Kurmai, devotees and well-wishers have already given generously and wholeheartedly. As the deadline draws near, we humbly reach out to friends, relatives, and devotees everywhere to join this great and sacred cause. Every contribution — however modest — becomes a permanent part of the Lord's restored abode, and a blessing that will be cherished for generations.
Let us together complete what the Lord Himself has called us to build.
